New technologies and services for emerging nomadic societies

Objective

The OZONE project will investigate, define and implement/integrate a framework to enable consumer oriented ambient intelligence applications. The requirements investigation at the beginning of the process as well as the evaluation at the end are use case driven and will involve extensive user trials. The resulting framework is intended to enhance the quality of life by offering relevant information and services to the individual, anywhere and at anytime. The envisaged framework consists of three architectural layers that will be designed and implemented in the project. The top layer takes care of the service enabling with an emphasis in the context awareness or sensitivity, the middle layer is responsible for the software environment where seamless task migration is an crucial issue while the bottom layer delivers a powerful computing platform where high performance computing at a low power level is the differentiating factor. The project is concluded with a technology gap investigation, based on the user trials of the use cases, resulting in recommendations for research issues in the domain of efficient pervasive computing.

OBJECTIVES
The objective of the OZONE project is to support the effective use and acceptance of ambient intelligence in the consumer domain. The OZONE initiative aims at the development of novel concepts, techniques and tools to provide invisible computing for the domestic and nomadic personal use of information technology. The developed concepts aim at improving the acceptability and usability for the average customer. One of the important concepts is the application of advanced technologies to support the user centric retrieval and consumption of information compared to the, current practice, computer centric approach. This requires special emphasis on natural interfaces that put the user in the foreground and the system in the background. Security and privacy are prerequisites for consumer acceptance of these systems and are covered in the projects software environment objectives. A final objective deals with the provision of a strong technology base enabling powerful, but energy-efficient, computing.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The project will start with an intensive requirements analysis and specification phase including an assessment of the state of the art of the relevant technologies. All these activities will be use-case (demonstrator) driven and early involvement and feedback from users is planned to assure the usefulness and user acceptance of the novel concepts. The initial phase should also guarantee the that the first version of the consumer oriented ambient intelligence environment will be able to host the demonstrators that will be used to assess the feasibility and usability of the application scenarios at the end of the project. The results of the requirements and specification phase are the basis for the definition and implementation activities of the project that has three tracks in parallel, the Service Enabling layer supporting seamless service discovery based on the user's device, infrastructure and social context, the Software Environment layer providing the necessary middleware for a generic invisible computing framework to enable, for instance, seamless task migration, and the Platform Architecture layer providing a useful, from an application point of view, and acceptable, from a customer point, solution. In the Integration and Demonstration phase of the project there are three concurrent tasks, the Integration, the development of Demonstrators and the Evaluation by users. The integration deals with the definition of the components that will be required to be integrated to support the demonstrations. This implies setting up the infrastructure in terms of networks and platforms, by selecting the technologies that will be mature enough to be integrated, and are required at that stage of the project from the demonstrators point of view, in incremental steps the integration approach will be continued. The demonstrators will deal with the three application scenarios that have been proposed in the initial phase of the project in order to validate the project achievements and to illustrate and promote the projects results and applicability. Besides the aforementioned phases and activities, resulting in the OZONE framework and its demonstrators, there are management, dissemination, standardisation and exploitation activities that are executed during the lifetime of the project.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
