Generic Information<br/>-based Decision Assistant

Objective

This project aims to contribute to the scientific and technological development of the Community by creating a novel service type in the financial investment business. Its objective is the development of an integrated Internet platform for generic information services. Its novelty lies in the unique integration of existing technologies and techniques in financial decision support models, content-based personalization, information retrieval and Natural Language Processing.

Objectives:
The technical objectives are to:

- develop a generic execution platform by integrating predictive models for financial analysis with existing advanced text processing techniques for information retrieval, information extraction and language processing. This will provide for customised information filtering and consulting services

- fully automate service execution, provide auto-response capabilities and ensure scalability of these operations

- offer fully automated pro-active and on-demand virtual research and consulting services through personalised financial / investment consulting services

- validate the platform for the effective and scalable provision of commercial consulting services in terms of both cost and performance

Work description:
A service engineering environment will be built by integrating components for financial analysis, personalisation and text processing using an existing object-oriented development platform that exploits the following features: scalability, extensibility, dynamic linking, simple interfaces, and messaging support.

The architecture of this environment will be characterised by a three-tier design:
- a middle-tier of business objects will integrate various service components
- mappings will be made to back-tier data-bases and other information sources.
- front-end clients will consist of interface objects responsible for user interaction built on an XML-based middleware infrastructure

Transmission of information will be possible using e-mail, fax, SMS, WAP by building modular components in the middle tier.

An information retrieval module will be developed by the integration and adaptation of existing components for searching, gathering and processing content. Significant content features will be located via techniques such as text summarization and information extraction.

A personalisation module will be developed to manage the generation and adaptation of user profiles, creating virtual communities / clusters of similar users and content and channel tailoring.

An investment consulting module will be developed to perform market analysis, implement different investment strategies and submit investment suggestions that involve adequate trading models according to the user profile.

Two types of models will be integrated:
(a) based on time series analysis, technical indicators, and chart formations;
(b) combined with assessment strategies based on fundamental indicators.

This environment will be evaluated on the basis of performance and cost-benefits. The results will be disseminated at international conferences and to financial organisations. The resulting software will be exploited through normal business channels by the participating organisations.

Milestones:
Milestone M1: Set up of Project (month 1)
Milestone M2: Completion of requirement analysis (month 3)
Milestone M3: Completion of detailed specifications (month 5)
Milestone M4: Completion of component development (month 12)
Milestone M5: Integrated demonstrator available, start of functional tests of platform (month 15)
Milestone M6: End of integration and demonstrator development (month 20)
Milestone M7: Project completion (month 24).
Central goal of the GIDA system is to provide assistance to users who are considering making investment decisions. Ultimately, such a decision depends on the following key components:
1. Fundamental analysis of securities under consideration. The basis for this analysis is the economic and business "logic" inferred from market data;
2. Technical analysis of securities. The basis for this analysis are intra-day and daily his-tories of prices and volumes of trading. GIDA analyses this data in both time and frequency domains;
3. Sentiment analysis of markets and securities by using news stories and summarizing them and subjecting to statistical analysis;
4. Experience, knowledge and risk profile of the client.

GIDA is client centric system and offers users powerful capabilities to define their profiles in a fine-grained fashion. GIDA follows the principles of Service Oriented Architectures. It is a coherent composition of distributed services provided by its partners. It combines offering from all four partners in a transparent and seamless fashion. GIDA is a real-time system whereby offered investment suggestions are based on the proc-essing of real-time data sources including market data and news stories. Once the trading signal or indicator has been generated it is disseminated in real, near real time or batch basis, depending on client preferences and capabilities The GIDA Projct developed a Service Platform that integrates all of these aspects of financial decision making. As an enterprise application, GIDA requires access to the information resources of the enterprise, which are usually partitioned through a number of existing heterogeneous applications, developed using different architectures, programming languages and platforms. Therefore GIDA is a multitier, component-based and service oriented enterprise integration architecture.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
