Professional and Ethical Codes for Technology-relatedSocio-Economic Research

Objective

The development of an Information Society is creating rapid change in the requirements for technology- related socio-economic research, & in the methods used to carry out this research & disseminate the results, with growing requirements for inter- & multi-disciplinary collaborations in international teams. In a context in which there are wide variations in legal & professional requirements & in research practice, RESPECT will produce professional & ethicalcodes of practice for technology- related socio-economic research covering intellectual property, data protection & ethical issues at a Europe-wide level. This will be done in close collaboration with practitioners & users, who will discuss the draft codes at an international conference. RESPECT will also produce directories of professional qualifications & professional bodies & a user's guide to socio-economic research for the broader policy & technology communities.

OBJECTIVES
To develop common European standards and benchmarks for technology-related socio-economic research- foster high standards in cross-national and cross-disciplinary socio-economic research relating to the IST programme- encourage the mobility of socio-economic researchers within the EU- contribute to broader ethical and professional debates within the socio-economic research community- provide information to users- disseminate the results to the socio-economic research, technology and policy communities by means of: a web-site; a conference; a code of practice; and a user's guide to socio-economic research aimed at the IST Community.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Review of existing legal and professional regulations and academic and professional practice. Production of:- intellectual property guidelines- an ethical code of conduct for socio-economic research - data protection guidelines- directory of existing professional and technical qualifications in the EU and recommendations for harmonisation and benchmarking.- directory of professional bodies and synthesis of existing professional codes.- organisation of conference at which codes will be discussed with practitioners and users.- production of practical user manual for the IST technical and policy communities.
