Objective
SCAMPI will develop and test a scaleable monitoring platform for the Internet, to enable, accelerate and promote the development of novel measurement-based tools for improving network services and networking research in Europe and beyond. Based on innovative concepts, methodologies and technologies for system organisation, software engineering and resource control SCAMPI will develop high-performance monitoring components and a flexible architecture to support a secure, programmable, multi-domain and shared monitoring infrastructure. The project will also develop novel applications based on the SCAMPI platform and will provide recommendations for future high-performance monitoring systems.
OBJECTIVES
The goal of SCAMPI is to develop a Scalable Monitoring Platform for the Internet, to enable, accelerate and promote the development of monitoring tools for improving services, technology and related research in Europe and beyond. SCAMPI has the following main objectives:
- to develop a network adapter initially at 10 Gbit/s tailored to the needs of monitoring tools;
- to develop an open and extensible monitoring architecture, to support a secure, programmable, multi-domain and shared monitoring infrastructure;
- to develop novel monitoring tools based on the SCAMPI platform;
- to identify the technical challenges and produce recommendations on future monitoring systems of 100 Gbit/s and beyond.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Towards developing a Scaleable Monitoring Platform for the Internet, the SCAMPI project is organized in five work-packages:
- WP0 "Requirements analysis" which will review and assess the state-of-the-art and identify existing, emerging and future requirements in the field of network monitoring;
WP1 "monitoring architecture design" which includes an in depth study of the various engineering options for designing an open and extensible architecture from the hardware level to the application programming interface, including the crucial middleware for resource control, resource sharing and security. While a refined architecture will be produced as the implementation progresses and the experiments provide early experience, the project will conclude with a broader set of architectural recommendations towards next-generation measurement environments;
WP2 "System implementation" which will implement the hardware and software components of the SCAMPI platform, carry out integration and testing and will develop novel monitoring tools such as DoS detection, traffic engineering, SLS monitoring and traffic analysis, exploiting and demonstrating the innovative aspects of the SCAMPI platform.
WP3 "Experimental evaluation" which will evaluate the components, the architecture and the novel monitoring tools in laboratory, testbed and operational environments, providing feedback for architecture refinement, and produce an overall assessment of the SCAMPI platform as well as valuable input towards the development of recommendations for next generation monitoring systems.
WP4 "Project management and dissemination", besides carrying out the required project coordination tasks, will provide an enhanced infrastructure for collaborative design and experimentation. Additionally, two workshops on monitoring will be organized and a pan-European measurement data archive will be developed.
