Designing an hybrid and emergent educational society

Objective

BAP project is aimed at assessing the feasibility of a long term project called Baghera, which will follow a completely new design approach of e-Learning environment. The project is based on: (1) the principle that human knowing consist of a diversity of conceptions whose basic criteria of relevance is not their conformity to a knowledge of reference but their efficiency in specific spheres of practice; (2) the necessity of co-operation between artificial agents and human beings - either teachers or learners - complementing each other. As a consequence, education is considered to be an emergent property of a society of heterogeneous agents (human and artificial, learners and teachers) interacting and collaborating within a systemic structure. Why "Baghera"? Because the core of the system will be a society of non-human agents taking care of the education of a human learner. But unlike the famous story, this time some human agents will take part in the adventure.

OBJECTIVES
The objective of the project is to shape and experiment radically new perspectives on the design of e-Learning environments. To achieve this ambition the project will shape the concepts and methods necessary for a strong inter-disciplinary cooperation. On the one hand, "e-Learning environment" means, here, not only the technology but the global system constituted by the machinery, its users and its environment. On the other hand, it is the project basic belief that the complexity of human learning can be faced only if e-Learning design takes the collaboration between artificial and human agents as a foundational principle. This requires a collaboration of the disciplines at every stage (at a very detailed level) of the design and of the implementation. It is the objective of the project to verify the tractability of this approach.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This assessment project will consist of:
(1) building an educational/computational conceptual framework and methodology to specify the targeted system;
(2) evaluating the conceptual framework by a mock-up running on a simple but demonstrative example;
(3) elaborating evaluation procedures to assess the educational quality of the resulting emergent process.

Three key tasks are identified in order to complete this assessment:
(1) development of the framework (conceptual framework, targeted architecture, design methodology) and of the validation procedures;
(2) mock-up and validation;
(3) open BAP Workshop for dissemination. Quality and relevance control: the project management will guaranty strong interactions between the partners, as well as tight interactions between the tasks which are dependent because of the nature of the principle of design the project intends to implement.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
