Objectif
Computational Logic is of growing importance in many academic and commercial fields and is currently on the verge of becoming an academic discipline of its own via the International Federation of Computational Logic (IFCoLog).
Unfortunately the academic disciplines involved, e.g. information technology, computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, electrical and mechanical engineering are spread rather widely and thus this network will try to unite and to provide an entry point for these separated communities. OBJECTIVES
Computational Logic is applied in many industrial and commercial fields, in particular in critical areas involving the environment, medicine and life sciences, pharmacological industry, management of scarce resources etc. This includes sewage control, traffic control, drug design, data management in medicine and many other areas. In addition, computational logic is significant for the verification of safety-critical software and hardware, the specification and verification of embedded systems and for security issues in the Internet. It is also of growing importance academically with more than ten thousand people working in research and development worldwide in logic related problems (see IFCoLog). The objective of this network is to combine the scattered communities into a virtual centre of excellence and to provide an entry point via website, email distribution lists as well as workshops and online documents and a newsletter
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
CologNet will be organised around nine major areas which are structured into the following topics:
1) Logic Methodology and Foundational Tools (Area 1);
2) Logic and Programming Languages:
2.1 Logic and Constraint Logic Programming (Area 2);
2.2 Implementation Technology for Computational Logic Systems(Area 3);
3) Logic as Information Processing:
3.1 Logic-based Data and Knowledge Systems (Area4);
3.2 Logic and Multiagent Systems (jointly with AgentLink) (Area 5);
3.3 Logic and Natural Processing (jointly with Elsnet) (Area6);
4) Formal Methods and Automated Reasoning:
4.1 Formal Methods, Specification and Verification (Area 7);
4.2 Automated Reasoning, Deduction, Theorem Proving and Model-Checking (Area 8);
5) Logic in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (jointly with EUNITE)(Area 9).
CologNet will represent Computational Logic at a European level and promote the take-up of CL technologies in industry, provide a world-wide (internet) entry point to CL through its WWW site, provide the European entry point to the International Federation of CL, IFColog, promote exchange and co-operation between the different CL areas, promote education and training measures, interchange of students and researchers, developing CL curricula, contribute to standard debates, devolop technological roadmaps for various subareas of CL, promote exchange with other groups and NoEs, e.g. in natural language processing, multi-agent systems and computational intelligence.
