Monitoring fish manufacturing process with Advanced Miniaturised subsystem and radio frequency Apparatus

Objective

MAMA aims to adapt, introduce and evaluate the leading edge electronic technology of miniaturised subsystem, combined with passive contactless radio frequency identification, into the process of manufacturing, packaging and distribution of refrigerated fish. The subsystem will embed in one single component, using high-density packaging, a thermal sensor and an Application Specific Integrated Circuit as sensor interface and RF transponder. The user will use it to implement quality control by identifying fails in refrigeration-chain preservation and to integrate and store goods' time-temperature profile; the supplier will gain an unique smart subsystem, open to various communication protocols and different sensors interfacing, reusable for many applications. No similar product is now available on the market. Dissemination will be carried out to companies where quality control and temperature preservation are major issues (food, chemical, pharmaceutical), or where joint product ID and sensing are needed.

Objectives:
MAMA technical objective is to develop and evaluate a miniaturised, low cost battery-free RF data logger to analyse thermal history of refreshed food and to implement an enhanced and reliable product identification. This electronic subsystem will be based on transponder ASIC and High Density Packaging technology.

MAMA business objectives are:
-To provide the user with the benefits of improved accuracy and efficiency of manufacturing and improved quality control processes, with better tracking of products, and complete, error free reporting on its thermal history, thus meeting regulations and controls in food preservation;
- To provide the supplier with a miniaturised, low cost, passive subsystem, equipped with a general purpose communication interface and a thermal sensor, reuseable on different and various application;
- Joint product exploitation.

Work description:
Development of a complete system, to be put in line with the already existing user company's manufacturing chain, including:
- general purpose ID contactless MAMA-TAG electronic subsystem equipped with thermal sensor
- reader units to read the MAMA-TAG device;
- antennas;
- application software to be associated with the tracking system, which in turn is connected to the user company's management information system.

The workplan to successfully carry out this project will be conducted through the workpackages of:
1. Management;
2. Training;
3. Design (System specification - Specification for the MAMA-TAG device, reader unit, and for antennas - ASIC partitioning and design - FPGA based Breadboard design - Reader unit and antenna design - Design of SW and HW interface from reader unit to PC);
4. Fabrication (Breadboard manufacturing - ASIC fabrication - MAMA-TAG manufacturing and assembling - Reader unit board manufacturing and assembling - Antennas manufacturing - System assembling);
5. Test and measurement and evaluation of results;
6. Dissemination of the results.

Milestones:
A successful new manufacturing and quality control process is expected to be installed at the user's. A well working new system is expected to be available for future exploitation by both user and supplier.
Detailed milestones are identified within the workplan of the proposal, with main achievements being:
- Realisation of a full digital transponder ASIC;
- Realisation of a miniaturised HDP subsystem;
- Implementation of a full operational complete system.
