Wiring Smart Enterprises in the Digital World through Process Orchestration

Objective

The main objective of Marke tMaker is to develop and demonstrate a highly sophisticated e-Sourcing platform for emerging BSPs in order to enable European enterprises become virtual nodes of highly integrated and dynamic value networks, under a service provision model.

The introduced business model will enable business partners:
-Exploit a common organizational modelling infrastructure based on predefined role-centric operations & document templates;
- Share a distributed workflow management architecture, able to serve both own-defined and standard operation & interaction models in the context of integrated role-based workplaces;
- Outsource their business partnerships management and wire their inter-organizational processes in the context of alternative types of marketplaces e.g. e-procurement, Internet retailing, reseller management, value chain management;
- Streamline their business communication, by automating document transformations and flows based on XML engines and commonly agreed market participation business rules;
- Harmonize their workflows in the context of dynamically constructed business partnerships, for enabling M2M cooperation and coordinated planning;
- Exploit a common market intelligence repository emerging by the continuous interaction among business partners;
- Share highly sophisticated enterprise resources available by value adding partners and service providers.

The technical & scientific results of the project will be:
- A mediation platform for the provision of the BSP operational infrastructure supporting:
- E-Market Modelling, for instantiating business rules in corporate partnerships;
- Organizational Modelling, for defining role-based workflows across physically distributed value networks;
- Work Flow Integration & Management, for wiring task-oriented work places inside and outside business environments.

Work description:
The rationale of the proposed work structure follows to a certain extent the incremental development process engineering methodology. This assumes that the problem definition is not covered to its full extend in the beginning of the project and that the understanding of the problem grows as prototype(s) build within the development process, generate and extract feedback from the users of the system. The end-user involvement in the early stages of the development reduces overall project risk by giving the user a chance to evaluate the new system and impacting the development process as it unfolds by providing valuable input for the development of the final system. To this end our methodology, involves the requirements elicitation and gathering both from the end-users, domain experts, and surveys on particular aspects of the business and technology environment. Then, follows the specification of an overall system architecture (although formally not a natural outcome of the incremental development process methodology) and the initial design of its relevant components. The end of the initial designs (end of month 9) will be accompanied with the delivery of a mock up demo (integrated with demo content) that will be presented to the users in order to validate the specification choices, and demonstrate the user functions.

The user assessment about this demo will provide early feedback for the redesign and implementation process of the Market Maker prototypes. The whole process will lead, to the implementation of an initial prototype (integrated with the necessary critical data) and its evaluation through the end-user involvement. Finally a new iteration of re-design and implementation activities will take place, taking into account both the evaluation results of the initial prototype and the demands of the market. The proposed methodology utilizes fully the UML notation to describe all the artifacts generated during project phases. To this end the system is described as an aggregation of models each representing a different aspect of the system (use-case model, design model, implementation model and test model). The initial steps for the deployment of the results, such as demonstrations and information dissemination, are already planned to take place during the project lifetime. However, the consortium is conscious that the exploitation of a research project must cope with a number of constraints such as finance, legislation, marketing and distribution, in order to become a successful commercial product. According to the project work plan, a considerable effort is allocated to the exploitation of results. The estimated resources need to include the set-up of support measures for bringing the project RTD results to the marketplace. Dissemination activities and support measures will provide a significant input to a Business Plan that will form the final project deliverable.

Among these, one can mention a specific information exchange between the project consortium and external players such as Application Service Providers, system developers, equipment manufacturers, network providers, venture capitalists, technology brokers, and end-users.

Milestones:
Milestone 1 [month 9]: Functional specification and design of initial Market Maker prototype & market analysis;
Milestone 2 [month 14]: Delivery of initial Market Maker prototype & 1st draft of Exploitation plan;
Milestone 3 [month 20]: Delivery of the final Market Maker prototype & 2nd draft of consortium's exploitation plan;
Milestone 4 [month 24]: Market Maker Technology Implementation Plan.
