Full Service AudioVisual Infrastructure for Metropolitan Access Networks

Objective

VisionAIR integrates, installs and operates four large trials in European cities by advancing existing infrastructure and following a full service convergence approach. The project implements a state of the art service delivery network enabled by next-generation network technologies, with a scope to validate these concepts in real-world trials. The trials are operated by municipalities, in accordance with their strategic plans of becoming specialized service providers in their area of authority, following the paradigm of US and large EU municipalities that create large, closed user groups for the benefit of their habitants, as a complement to the existing service offerings of typical Telcos and Internet Service Providers. Operators and Consulting companies participate in the project, to align the specialized, social interests of the municipalities with the pure business nature of the interests of the providers and operators.

Objectives:
(1) Exploit existing, next generation fiber and DSL networks in four European cities, set-up large trials and experiment with convergent, IP voice, data and video based services;
2) deploy service delivery platforms based on existing, owned or leased access infrastructure;
3) perform 1.5 years of extensive user trials with broadband services and experiment with service bundles deployment based on the OSGI framework;
4) validate equipment interoperability and service interworking as well as to offer end-user privacy, data security, and QoS;
5) develop and validate usage scenarios, carry out extensive human-centric studies with the help of independent human-aspect analysis consultants;
6) develop & validate business models to be used as a paradigm for massive deployment;
7) contribute to standards regarding service bundle deployment over convergent access networks.

Work description:
VisionAIR will integrate and adapt various service frameworks following a full service convergence approach so as to provide applications based on data, voice and video streams. The project will integrate advanced residential trials, set-up as an ideal, always connected, Internet, voice and video enabled home environment, with a central gateway per user site and peripheral devices for each application. Existing content and application servers will be integrated in the core network as well.

The trials will be based on: (1) typical residential multi-dweller-buildings (very usual situation in lower-income populations), (2) typical small-business MTUs (with a medium number of Small/Medium businesses), (3) blocks with single-family households (typical in higher-income populations), (4) small number of schools using existing, properly equipped classrooms, and (5) public administration buildings

Milestones:
Milestones: (1) Platforms Specs, (2) Specs of architectures, services and trials, (3) Adaptation and Integration of services bundles, (4) Full service integration and User assessment method,(5) Operating large scale trials.

Results: (a) Full-service delivery networks for the urban consumers of municipalities, (b) Validated business practices & models for convergent services deployment, (c) User assessment of service aspects including price, performance, security and QoS.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
