Multimedia tool for the promotion of MicroSysTems

Objective

The microsystem field is a complex area, in term of technologies, markets and applications. In order to present both the technical, marketing and economical environment of the Microsystem fields, the Consortium proposes to elaborate a new CD ROM able to be diffused to a very large population of users: industrial companies including SMEs, investors, students and schools

The CD-ROM will show 10 examples of products which have been selected in order to cover a wide spectrum of both application fields and fabrication technologies. For each of these examples, five different aspects are shown: a short description, the functionality, the fabrication, the applications and the economics. The description of the fabrication processes used for the production of these 10 devices leads to a detailed description, enhanced with animations, pictures and video sequences, of many single processes used in microsystem technologies. Compared to the previous version of the CD, the purpose of this project is to add 4 complete new examples, update the 6 existing ones and the technology description, include a new section concerning the economical, market analysis and industrial infrastructure of the MST field, provide new functions to the user (ability to define complex presentation for example) and translate the text and voice explanation in English, French and German. The project includes also dissemination actions: presence at 12 key MST conferences and exhibitions, focused actions toward specific targets (investors, universities, schools and journalists), using free CD to make the promotion of the project.

Objectives:
The aim of the CD-MST proposal is to widen the knowledge of microsystems technologies and applications in Europe. This goal will be achieved by building a CD ROM giving an overview of the Microsystems applications (description of 10 existing industrial applications), a "non expert" description of the technologies involved in the manufacturing of a Microsystems and complete description of the industrial food chain and infrastructure linked to the Microsystems activities. The key users targeted with the CD ROM are industrial companies willing to understand how Microsystems are used in the industry, investors willing to have a global overview of the microsystem fields in term of applications, technologies and markets and also students: the CR ROM can be used in schools (technical and non technical) in order to present the microsystem fields and help to overcome the skills shortage and motivate pupils and young students to study microtechnology and to work as an engineer by the use of the CD MST through trainers. The CD ROM will be completely available at the end of this project.

Work description:
The work programme of the CD-MST project is to elaborate a CD ROM in order to get access to all the useful information which is important to understand the microsystem fields:
- Work with 10 European industrial companies in order to have the information presenting the technical and economical aspects of their products;
- Elaborate the technical description (for non technical person) of the different microsystem technologies involved in the design and manufacturing of a MST device;
- Find and structure the economical and market data describing the microsystem world in order to have a complete understanding of the MST business;
- Structure and implement all this information in a user friendly CD ROM, in 3 languages (English, German and French) with functions helping the user to have direct access to specific information, make specific custom presentations.

The promotion and dissemination activities are also included in the project, especially focused actions toward specific targets (investors, universities, schools and journalists), using free CD to make the promotion of the project. A systematic validation of each step of the CD ROM will be made in the project in order to have, during the project, a finalised version of the CD, able to be marketed and diffused largely to the possible users and customers in Europe. FSRM and MIB funding are provided by the Swiss government.

Milestones:
- Implement 10 European industrial examples of Microsystems in the CD ROM;
- Implement a complete marketing and industrial analysis of the microsystem fields, using existing information;
- Set-up functionalities in the CD in order to be able to use it to make specific presentations;
- Disseminate information on the project and the CD European wide and toward selected targets;
- Have at the end of the project a CD completed, ready to be diffused largely in Europe.
