AIR FREIGHT TRANSPORT and EUROPEAN INTERMODALITY

Objective

AFTEI Project aims to set up the conditions for intermodality between the air transport chain and other modes of transport, from the economical, logistic and information system point of view, to highlight the economic chain supporting door-to-door freight transport.
AFTEI seeks to identify actions which will help freight users to make use of the optimal transport mode at each point of the transport chain.
In the trans-European networks context, efforts are currently being made to promote all forms of combined transports such as road, rail and inland waterways. It seems equally essential, taking into account the importance of air transport, to encourage inter-modal cooperation involving this mode of freight transport.
Air-Rail Intermodality will be focused around Terminal Integration in airports and the place of the Terminal in the door-to-door transport chain. The project will clarify the legal, technical and economical issues that permit the promotion of pilot actions and will address contributions to Standardization bodies and to European Union Programs.
The AFTEI project takes into account the following aspects :
- State of the Art : market study, constraints identification (economical, legal, standard), infrastructures, Networks and Services
- Information Services and Advanced Logistics Specifications : Interconnectivity and interoperability from the point of view of the terminal and the door-to-door transport chain.
- Validation : this work will be validated through case studies based on the real situation of members of a wide Pan European User Group (PEUG).
The project is being represented by a consortium of private and public companies which are involved in the Freight Intermodal Market : airports, air cargo companies, logistics, forwarders, railway organisations, value added services providers
