Objective
This proposal covers the development of a low cost sheet material which acts as a thermal diode, permitting heat transfer in one direction while acting as an insulating material in the opposite direction. The sheets will be designed so that they can be used as cladding on new or existing buildings.
1. Objectives of the project:
1. To develop a thermal diode suitable for fabrication in sheet form. 2. To investigate manufacturing methods for the diode amenable to low cost mass production.
3. To devise appropriate modelling techniques to permit the prediction of the performance of various structures incorporating the thermal diode. 4. To determine the energy saving potential of the thermal diode under different climatic ccnditions.
2. Technical approach
In order to achieve these objectives the wcrk ccntent will be divided into six Tasks
1. Design and manufacture of prototype thermal diode wall.
2. Inccrporation of the diode wall into a building system suitable for Northern Europe.
3. Incorporation of the diode wall into a building system suitable for Southern Europe.
4. Steady state and transient testing of prototype diode walls. 5. Installation and monitoring of the thermal diode wall in an instrumented test house.
6. Reporting and collating of the results obtained from the above tasks.
3. Expected achievements
Completion of this work will result in a design of thermal diode wall suitable for mass production at low cost. It will also lead to the formation of models of the diode performance under a range of conditions so that systems incorporating the diode may be designed for installation throughout the EU and world-wide.
