The JOULE-III project PRODETO (probabilistic design tool) was initiated with the following main objectives: - Development of a computer code for wind turbine manufacturers and certifying bodies to be used partly as a tool for structural reliability analyses of wind turbine components and partly as a safety factors calibration tool. The computer code will apply to fatigue failure mainly and should be able to handle both measured and calculated 10-minutes load series. - Transfer of knowledge about structural reliability analyses and how to calibrate safety factors to manufacturers (NEG-Micon and Aerpac) and certifying bodies (CIWI in the Netherlands via ECN, DNV in Denmark and Germanischer Lloyd in Germany). - Extension of structural reliability methods to analyze ultimate loads and ultimate strength instead of fatigue only. Part of the current project is based on procedures developed or described in previous research projects, including European Wind Turbine Standards I, Sub project 2 "Calibration of Safety Factors", by implementing them within a framework of reliability analyses. This first of all refers to models required for fatigue analyses. Probabilistic load models necessary for analysis of failure in ultimate loading have been established within the present project. The implementation is made partly in terms of development of a computer code for structural reliability analysis of wind-turbine rotor blades, and partly in terms of demonstration of examples of applications. The project is thus mainly an implementation project. One of its prime purposes, in the context of wind turbine design, is to provide a better understanding of what partial safety factors represent and how they are derived and calibrated.
