Objective
Objectives
The research will be carried out by scientific rules, analyzing technical and economic aspects as well as institutional, social and environmental problems, to find out the real potential of biomass to contribute to electrical energy production in certain areas. The main research objectives are:
- to solve the problems linked to direct combustion, gasification and electricity generation, as to warrant gas emission with low NOx content, to investigate the whole "biomass trail" from nature back to nature and to have locals agree with the installation of these plants near their houses;
- the characterization of the biomass market studying the costs of pre-treatment, transport and storage, and formulation of a methodology to define a stock structure, which also includes contracts and agreements between forest owners, forest management agencies and forest product consumers, agricultural operators, agrofood industries, etc.
Technical Approach
The common programme consists of 4 basic tasks:
Task 1 Inventory of mix composition of locally existing biomass. Task 2 Identification of homogeneous areas and places of pinking biomass Task 3 Obstacles and opportunities to start local projects. Task 4 Feasibility study of biomass application projects.
A common methodology to collect data will be used. In Piedmont the contacts developed with public and private operators are useful to individualise opportunities to install bio-electricity plants. Systematic analysis of the regional potential biomass is an essential tool to encourage public authorities to optimise the local biomass resources.
Different institutes in Portugal periodically update the information needed in forestry, food industry, wood processing industry and urban waste sectors. ICAEN gives particular attention to forestal and industrial biomass utilization to produce electricity by gasification technologies.
Expected Achievements and Exploitation
Diffusion of research results can accelerate penetration of biomass technologies. In the participating regions contractors will stimulate public and private operators to build electricity-production plants. In Italy, many manufacturers/system designers were interested, and for example, ENEL is interested in projects on biomass utilization. The region of Alentejo (PT) has been chosen to carry out the study as it is the most underdeveloped part and is dependent on agriculture as the main economic activity. The biomass potential energy of this region is high and the concept of energy farming could be implemented to its full capacity. In Catalonia ICAEN has been stimulating public and private operators to build CHP plants fuelled with biomass.
