Objective
Objectives
The primary objective of the project is to continue the work already performed on a large wind turbine under the Second Framework, Project No. JOU2-CT92-0171.
1. An upscaling of the 750 kW machine to 1 MW rated power and 55-60 m rotor diameter
2. The development of machine learning techniques suitable for the automatic optimization of turbine operation to a specific local wind, turbulence and grid regime
3. The development of a commercially competitive variable speed drive based on the newest IGBT technology
4. The development of a "stealth" type of external design with minimal visual impact on the environment
Technical Approach
The upscaling of the 750 kW machine to a larger rotor and higher rated power is a development process which has been common in the gradual size increase of modern wind turbines. It represents the most cost-efficient way of building larger turbines.
The machine learning techniques will, when using the "intelligent" potentials of such regulation, allow the adaption and optimization of one basic turbine type to a wide range of wind regimes.
The purpose of the variable speed drive part in the present project is to develop a competitive industrial drive with the latest higher-voltage IGBT and filter technologies. The resulting drive system will be generally available on the market for both wind turbines and other industrial use. The visual impact of wind turbines is becoming the most important environmental problem of large-scale wind power integration. With the present project we will attempt to introduce "stealth" technology in the visual design of the 1 MW turbine. This is done by making the rotor blades transparent (or, more likely, translucent, showing light intensity and colour of the background but no detail images), and by selecting the optimum tower coating.
Expected Achievements and Exploitation
The project has the following measurable objectives:
- A cost efficiency improvement of more than 10 percent relative to the 750 kW turbine under any wind conditions
- Adaptive regulation capable of reducing the wind induced operational blade and rotor loads by at least 10 percent relative to comprehensive designs of similar size and concept
- A variable speed drive with higher reliability (MTBF target: 200,000 h), reduced costs (Cost target: 20,000 ECU/MW) and high efficiency (Converter efficiency target: 0.98)
- A visual impact which is judged by an independent survey to be significantly reduced relative to conventional designs
The resulting turbine will be exploited commercially by Bonus. The technologies adaptable design and the stealth type environmental adaptation technologies will be exploited by all three project partners.
