Objective The main objective of the research is to develop a general purpose stationary flywheel for energy storage. The main tasks are to integrate the electromechanical power conversion in the flywheel construction in order to improve the efficiency and furthermore find the optimal material for the rotating wheel from a point of view of strength and cost. The system application have to be identified in a market review and weighted for the economical aspects. Especially renewable energy sources with a fluctuating energy flow, such as windpower have a need for a dynamic storage to satisfy the demand. Further secondary aspects of this technique are use of permanent magnets to improve the efficiency and avoid heating in the rotorwheel, cooling of remaining losses, dynamics, capacity and performances.
