Development of a novel integrated biomass fast pyrolysis-Diesel engine system for power generation

Objective

The intended RTD project aims to the implementation of an integrated bio-electricity system based on fast pyrolysis for the production of liquids and power generation in a dual-fuel diesel engine. This combination is currently considered the more economical way to generate electricity in the small-to-medium power scale (0.1 to 5 MWe). However, the integration of system components is currently non-existent, so that the intended RTD will gap this constraint permitting cost estimation, performance analysis of the planned system as well as establishing a strategy for facing technical problems and exploiting the opportunities identified. More specifically, the intended RTD will focus on:
1. Operation, performance assessment and optimisation of an advanced fast pyrolysis process for converting a variety of forestry and agricultural residues to liquid products (pyrolysis liquids).
2. Modification of a conventional diesel engine to efficiently utilise the pyrolysis liquids derived from biomass fast pyrolysis process above.
3. Integration of the two components (fast pyrolysis and power production) in a system to demonstrate the proposed, entire biomass-to-electricity route. The expected results of the proposed project research phase will permit the SME involved to expand their activities into new, emerging markets as well as establish synergies to reduce system development cost with related economic benefits.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
