Objective
The objective of the proposal is to evaluate the potential of new energy technologies in the Mediterranean basin and to assess their contribution to socio-economic development, to energy trade and security of supply and to the protection of the environment. This study will be useful to the EC in promoting the most adapted technologies in the Mediterranean region, through RDD programs and cooperation projects, and to the European industry to develop products which have large market potential in the region.
The Mediterranean basin has been identified by the European Commission as a zone of strategic interest for the future. The necessity of analysing with an adequate level of detail the energy trends and forecasts for these countries and the role of energy technologies in mandatory in order to evaluate future energy exchanges, energy technology, market opportunities, and environmental issues. Within the project, particular focus should be given to the four aspects that are considered as the basic lines of the study : institutional and policy aspects, demand trends, energy network and technological needs. The study will contain 4 main tasks :
Task1 : Analysis of institutional and policy aspects and trends for socio-economic and industrial development at medium and long terms. Task2 : Study of prospects for energy demand supply and trade in the Mediterranean countries (using specific models such as POLES). Task3 : Market appraisal for new energy technologies and evaluation of the benefits related to their diffusion in the region (economic, social and environmental).
Task4 : Workshop with the industry to discuss the conditions to develop the use of the most promising technologies (future RD, demonstration, market incentives, industrial strategy,...).
The results of the project will serve to oriente strategies for RandD and for industrial development.
