Objectif The aim of this project is to integrate "sound" bioclimatic architectural design of a 700 bed General Teaching Hospital with innovative but appropriate electrical and mechanical services in order to : - enhance the comfort and well-being of the users - decrease the pollution of the environment - reduce the consumption of energy especially from non-renewable sources - serve as an example of a properly integrated team approach to design. - produce papers on related issues of energy conservation, comfort, hygiene and hospital design to serve other similar applications. A 700 bed General Teaching Hospital is to be erected and managed to serve the north-eastern part of the city of Thessaloniki in Greece. The site, of 157.000 m2, is located 7 km from the city centre, facing the city peripheral motorway. The area is still undeveloped. The site has a smooth slope, which increases gradually from the motorway to the hills. The building is organized around the entrance central hall of level +1 from which the main vertical and horizontal circulation axes lead to wings of different heights of less than seven storeys. The south-east area of the complex includes the nursing wards and the northwest the diagnosis and therapy departments. The nursing units are developed in two L-shaped wings in the quiet zone of the site. Each wing consists of two ward units where the patients rooms have a south or east orientation. The building has been conceived from the start with bioclimatic issues in mind. The design team is developing the design in collaboration with specialists on bioclimatic issues. The following targets have been established : - landscaping from a bioclimatic design point of view, - indoor air quality and comfort, - ventilation, - heat recovery and reduction of losses, - shading, - passive cooling, - daylighting, - building energy management system, and energy management instructions.
