Objective
Foreland basins are known to be important sites for the formation and accumulation of hydrocarbons but only a few of them have been thoroughly investigated. In Europe they are mainly located in the Alpine and Pyrenean mountain belts. The Vic area in the southern Pyrenean foreland has been selected for further, more detailed work in this project.
The main project aims are:
- To develop detailed 2D and 3D predictive computer models of the lithostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic evolution of clastic, carbonate and evaporite sediments in a foreland basin setting. - To determine the controls on facies architecture.
- To combine computer models with detailed geological and geophysical field data to test models of the response of the lithosphere to thrust emplacement.
Recent developments in computer modelling make it possible to quantitatively test conceptual models of tectonic/sedimentary systems interactively and thus allow geologists to develop detailed models of the evolution of extensional basins. The techniques necessary for computer modelling of sediment type and distribution within a foreland basin context are well advanced at RHBNC for the two-dimensional case. This project is a unique opportunity to test and calibrate such a model against extensive geological and geophysical field data, being collected by CSIC-ICT, and to extend the modelling to the more realistic three-dimensional case.
