European Hot Dry Rock geothermal research programme 1992-1993

Exploitable results

This project is part of a long-term programme aiming to demonstrate the recovery of useful heat from poorly permeable, deep crustal or basement rocks, and to use this extracted heat for electricity generation and/or heat supply purposes. The objective of this particular phase of the programme was to identify the most suitable site for a pilot plant from three possible locations: Bad Urach (Germany), Soultz-sous- Forêts (France) and Rosemanowes (UK). Since 1977, the Hot Dry Rock research programme has consisted of a series of projects undertaken at a national level across several European countries. All these teams have now been brought together to gather detailed information from each site. From this, an optimal site would be chosen for further research with the aim of developing a prototype unit.
