A new methodology for energy and environment synthesis of industrial processes


The objective of the project is to establish methods and generic engineering tools, to quantify and improve both the energy efficiency and environmental friendliness of industrial processes. A major concern is the interrelationship between these two goals.

Techniques for energy synthesis in industrial processes have stressed the necessity of having a synthetic approach. These prove to be very efficient to propose process modifications and to discover the bottlenecks of industrial processes. The key idea of the project is to analyze the possibilities for these techniques to tackle use of energy together with environmental concerns.

Two case studies from two representative major industries will be examined: one brewing industry (in the UK). The role of these two industrial partners involved in the project is to provide the data for the case studies and verify that the solutions proposed are suitable for industrial applications. 1. Data acquisition and problem definition.
2. Testing of the energy synthesis methods to tackle energy integration together with environmental constraints. If pollutants emission reduction, when saving energy, has not been shown, other aspects will be analyzed, like : - the possibility of using energy savings to finance environmental process enhancements;
- the use of process integration to make process
enhancemet possible: for instance the use of excess
energy for concentration or the treatment of
- the use of utility systems and the integration of all
types of energy (thermal and mechanical) to make the
enhancements technically feasible.
They aim to set-up rules for integrating pollution reduction techniques together with rules for energy savings.

3. Development of generic computer tools that will use optimization strategies with environmental constraints formulated in a mathematical form.

A final task of the project is to develop a new concept: the cost break even (CBE) point. This corresponds to the cost of the environmental impact that might be accepted by the proposed solution. If the environmental cost is higher than the CBE, new techniques will have to be used and new investments will have to be considered.
