Objectif To develop numerical models of two phase gaseous/solid flow, heat transfer, combustion and burn out behaviour of coal combustion in Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustors to obtain minimum emissions of air pollutants like sulphur dioxide, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide, respectively. The work programme covers the development and extension of two existing model approaches to the conditions of Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustors. The first is a 1-D Model for bubbling FBC, developed during recent EC-solid fuel research programs at IST, Lisbon. Second is a 3-D furnace model for pulverized coal combustion developed at IWBT, Braunschweig. Both models will be extended to the conditions of high particle loaded gaseous/solid flow. In order to investigate the necessary details of flow conditions, combustion and burn-out behaviour, flow and combustion experiments will be carried out during the three phases of the program: 1) Flow experiments under cold conditions at a 0,1 MW model plant at NTUA, Athens. After the cold part of the experiments this model will be rebuilt to work under combustion conditions. Experiments will be carried out to obtain heat transfer coefficients, combustion and burn out, respectively. 2) Verification of the models by comparing calculated values with the experimental results from phase 1. 3) Combustion experiments at a 1,2 MW test rig built by EVT at RWE's Niederaussem-Plant near Cologne. In the test rig some different European lignites and bituminous coals and additives, respectively, will be burned under industrial conditions to find out optimum combustion conditions and fuel /additives. To validate model calculations and to find out optimum combustion conditions the model results will be compared with the experimental results taken from the two experimental furnaces.
