Objective
The project concerns the design, construction and operation of a continuous pilot plant for the microbiological removal of pyritic sulphur from coal.
The pilot plant project will be carried out according to the following steps :
Step 1: Plant design.
The pilot plant will have a maximum capacity of 50 Kg per hour of 40 microns ground coal. During this phase, further testing can be carried out in order to better identify the sizes and geometries of the various machines (reactors, thickeners).
The plant will consist of three main sections :
Feed preparation section
Reactor section
Downstream processing section
Step 2 : Equipment purchase and plant build-up.
Step 3 : In order to check the performances of the plants items and for training purposes, the first week of operation will be held by feeding the plant with raw water, there after with a 20% solid pulp feed without inoculation of microorganism. After this period the solids content of the pulp will be lowered to 5% and microorganisms will be inoculated.
During the subsequent steps the solids content in the pulp will be gradually increased to the correct value according to the optimum technical economic bio-depyritization conditions. The acquired data will be critically considered and will be useful to improve the basic data we had for the pilot design, in order to assure critical scale-up factors to develop process patterns and to achieve the real know-how and design parameters.
