The feeding of PFBC by utilisation of pressurizes C-WAM (Coal-Water-Air-Mixture)

Objective

Formulation of pressurized and atmospheric C-WAM and CS-WAM (Coal-Water-Air mixture and Coal-Sorbent-Water-Air mixture) for the feeding of Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustor. Various coals, tailings and sorbents will be utilized for the formulations. The resulting PC-WAM will be tested under a direct injection in PFBC.

DGTE and ESCOM will be in charge of the preliminary laboratory tests needed to formulate atmospheric C-WAM based on various coals, tailings and sorbents selected and supplied by CERCHAR, ENDESA and ENEL. The various preliminary experiments that CADET has conducted have confirmed that with a prototype pseudo-homogeneous loaded foams may be obtained, and that the pressurization time may be reduced from hours to minutes. Consequently, the design and the erection of the PC-WAM (Pressurized Coal Water Air Mixture/Pressurized Sorbent Coal Water) preparation pilot plant needed for this research program will be conducted jointly by DGTE and CADET combining the current know-how of CADET on PS-LGS (Pressurized Solid Liquid Gas Suspension) (int.patent 1989) and the results and expertise that DGTE gained during the previous DC XII PC-WAM works. In order to feed at full load the ENEL pressurized Fluidized Bed of 3 MWt, it will be necessary to design a 350 kg/h continuous PC-WAM preparation pilot plant under 7 bars max.

Tests and modifications of the PC-WAM preparation pilot plant will be performed. Pressure drops versus flow rates data by self-expansion of PC-WAM and PCS-WAM between the preparation unit and the pressurized vessel, through tubes will serve to assess the conditions of feeding a FB. Two nozzles for injection will be utilized, a Y-jet injector developed by DGTE and the parallel flows injector developed by IRC/CNR.

In the same time, formulation of SS-LAM (Sublimating Solid/Liquid/Air Mixture) preparation pilot will be conducted by DGTE and utilized by DTPS for the hydrodynamical characterization of the jet penetration within a fluidized bed.

The combustion tests in pressurized Fluidized Bed will be conducted by ENEL in Livorno, with the assistance of IRC/CNR. The results of these tests will be compared with those obtained by feeding the combustor with a mixture of dry coal and dry limestone. A synthetic review or all the technical results, based on the progress reports of each participant, together with an economic evaluation, will serve to evaluate the suitability of PC-WAM for the feeding of PFBC installations and the scaling-up procedures.
