Objective
The project is aimed to investigate in a partly micro study special fields of wind energy utilization in electric utilities with concentration on following subjects : system stability, wind predictability, grid interface, wind farm cost and operation, wind in co-generation with other renewables.
The work program covers studies on the above mentioned items:
1) System stability:
the influence of a large number of wind farms - mainly installed at the coast of the North sea - on the high voltage network system has to be analyzed in relation to sudden outages, failures or large power increases of wind farms.
2) Wind predictability:
in order to get a 36 h wind speed forecast Riso and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories develop a model, where 50 weather stations all over Europe are involved. CONSULECTRA will support both institutes by supplying the necessary data from German weather stations.
3) Grid interface:
in cooperation with the University of Dortmund CONSULECTRA will develop numeric simulation programs of stationary and dynamic kind to analyze the influence of the power of wind turbines in larger numbers to the network system behaviour. Here any number of supply situations can be applied to identify several parameters as voltage and frequency fluctuations as well as in the short term ( 1 sec.) as in the long term range, the influence of harmonic etc.
Within the whole study it is necessary to know the composition of the customer groups forming the load curve in each time interval. In different steps network systems with different criteria in relation to size, structure (industry, households, traffic systems etc.) have to be worked out. In the following it has to be analyzed, which effect the feeding of wind turbines into these network systems has and how different wind conditions influence the load flow in the system. Finally the study has to be carried out for wind turbines with synchro and asynchro generators, which show a completely different behaviour.
Wind farm cost and operation: in order to set-up a data bank for one-off and operational data by the commission CONSULECTRA will supply these data form German wind farms.
Wind in co-generation with other renewables: CONSULECTRA will search for such projects in Germany and will give closer description of size and functioning of these plants.
NB: This contract is part of an important joint study on wind power integration that is specific for each European country.
