MULINEX is concerned with the efficient use of multilingual online information. The aim is to process multilingual information and present it to the user in a way which facilitates finding and evaluating the desired information quickly and accurately. In the initial phase search queries and summaries of web documents are translated to enable the user to make use of multilingual information. At a later stage, by technology from the area of Computational Linguistics, multilingual content is indexed not only using words occurring in the text, but also according to concepts. The application will offer an economic advantage in particular to providers of multilingual on-line and WWW services. At present the Internet is still dominated by English services and content. However, the proportion of information present in other languages is increasing daily. In the not too distant future, citizens of the information society will be able to browse through the digitised knowledge of humanity in their mother tongue; even though this knowledge will be distributed across the globe in a multitude of languages. MULINEX is a multilingual search engine for the WWW. During the phase of document gathering, the system extracts information about documents by making use of language identification, thematic classification and automatic summarisation. In the search phase, the users' query terms are translated in order to enable search in different languages. Search results are presented with a summary and information about the language and thematic categories to which the document belongs. Summaries and documents are translated on demand by making use of the LOGOS machine translation system. The current MULINEX prototype supports French, German and English and is the first system for translingual information access integrating retrieval, summarisation, automatic thematic categorisation and translation. The MULINEX system consists of weakly coupled subsystems. The underlying architecture is object-oriented and manager-based resulting in a highly modular, flexible and extendible system.
