Study and Development of Technologies for Safe and Environmentally Optimal Recovery and Disposal of Explosive Wastes

Objective

The project is carried out by a private consulting and engineering company specialised in the disposal of harmful and hazardous waste. The end of the Cold War and the new political situation in Europe have left large amounts of surplus ammunition and explosives waste. Traditionally the waste is destroyed by incineration and detonation, however these methods are not environmentally acceptable. The beneficiary is co-operating with two organisations from the Netherlands and South Africa, the Danish military, a company specialised in the treatment of hazardous waste, and the Danish Technical University.

The project will carry out a survey of the explosives and ammunition and the available disposal and destroying techniques. This phase will be followed by the development of methods for safe handling of the explosives and disposal tests within existing facilities, e.g. through incineration and closed detonation. These measures will result in recommendations for managing and recovering of the waste.
