Regional Glass Waste Recovery and Recycling Organized as a Pilot Project in the Helsinki University Central Hospital and Two Hospital Districts in the Province of Uusimaa, Finland

Objective

The beneficiary is the largest hospital in Finland and the central hospital for the Uusimaa Region (population of more than one million). The project cooperates with 30 hospitals and hospital managements/administrations in the region. In general hospitals generate different kinds of glass waste, all of which is considered hazardous waste and is destoyed at high cost. As there is no systematic separation at source, the current glass collection systems do not differentiate between clear and coloured glass nor glass having hazardous remains and glass free of any harmful substances.

The project will analyse the feasibility of establishing source separation schemes to reduce the problems related to glass waste disposal in hospitals. The expected results are a feasible model for promoting the recovery and safe handling of potentially harmful and hazardous glass fractions. The project also improves occupational safety in waste management by standardising procedures and equipment. The volumes of potentially hazardous glass at landfills may be reduced as a result.
