Objective
The beneficiary is a Swedish local authority which is responsible for environmental protection. Wetlands have decreased some 90 % during this century alone. Increased nutrient loads and reduced wetland areas, together with canalisation of water streams, have resulted in eutrofication of lakes, streams and coastal waters. Up to now, the measures applied to combat eutrophication have been of technical nature addressing waste water treatment and the use of fertilisers in agriculture. It seems that these measures are insufficient to solve the problem. The field work of project concentrates in the catchment areas of two small rivers (Kävlingeå and Höjeå) with a total catchment area of 1500 square kilometers.
The project aims in the long run to reduce the nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in lakes and coastal areas, create more favourable conditions for animals and plants directly dependant on water areas, increase opportunities for the public access to the nature areas, and promote cooperation between authorities and farmers in supporting sustainable development. Some 85 new dams and related wetland areas will be established as well as 25 hectares of protected areas along the water streams.
