Objective
The project intends to buy 11 hectares of land, consisting of the nuclei of the Stellario-Carpinetum oak-hornbeam stands and areas bordering the pools where the little bittern nests, to put them out of reach of property speculation. In the Groane woods, besides encouraging the re-establishment of the mixed broad-leaved forest (oak-hornbeam stands of the Stellario-Carpinetum type) and conservation of the habitat type in which the black kite nests, measures in favour of the pools and heaths are foreseen. To reduce the risk of fires, measures to improve access for firefighters and to lay out fire breaks are to be carried out. Finally, visitor access will be restricted to pre-established itineraries.
The Groane woods and Cesate pine forest, northwest of Milan, represent the last tracts of woodland remaining in the Province of Milan, the territory encompassing Italy's greatest industrial conurbation. These two sites are of particular significance because they represent the last remnant of the characteristic natural vegetation for the Lombard plains north of Milan, where the clayey nature of the terrain nurtures a very specific vegetation, in serious danger in the lowlands south of the Italian Alps on account of the intense urbanization of the area. The Groane woods and the Cesate pine forest both contain wetlands in which numerous species threatened with extinction occur, both animal (black kite, little bittern, hen harrier) and vegetable (oak-hornbeam stands of the Stellario-Carpinetum type).
The regional park encompassing these two sites is however much frequented by visitors. Continuous comings and goings outside designated trails by mountain bikers and horse riders are eroding the grass cover, causing the herbaceous vegetation to disappear. The entire zone is furthermore seriously at risk from wildfires.
