Caves and bats conservation in woodlands and seminatural dry grasslands and scrublands facies on calcareous substrates managment

Objective

As a first step, a comprehensive mapping of the site will take place, in which the correct location of all the caves will be determined as a prelude to the purchase of the most vulnerable. Next, the status of the various bat species will be assessed in detail and 300 boxes will be installed for bats to use as breeding quarters. A forest management plan will be drawn up which should start the re-conversion from coppices to a forest of tall trees, but which will also ensure that old and hollow trees are preserved as they are of vital importance as bat habitat. The possibility of allowing a "sustainable" harvest of timber by local residents will also be examined.
Some sections, which require particular care, will be purchased on the slopes where the largest concentrations of caves occur. As for the dry grasslands, a model for differential mowing will be tried out in pilot areas, applicable for this type of habitat both in the Campo dei Fiori park and in other, similar Alpine foothill zones. Increasing the insect biomass in these grasslands will improve feeding opportunities for bats. A tailor made education programme on the function and significance of bats, aimed at schools and local residents, will back up the project.

The Campo dei Fiori Nature Park contains habitats and species of Community interest which are under increasing threat. Its dry grasslands on calcareous substrate, for example, are very important feeding grounds for the honey buzzard but are undergoing a significant reduction because of the abandonment of some traditional forms of agriculture. Populations of the eight species of bat present there, including three species on Annex II of the Habitats Directive, are steadily declining while sites suitable for bat hibernation, courtship and birth lairs have decreased noticeably. The nature park's limestone caves and other subterranean ecosystems are threatened by the periodic, uncontrolled flushing of drains and sewers, which has severe impacts on the local bats dwelling there. The aging of its forests also poses problems. There is no adequate forest management plan, and inappropriate exploitation of the woods would have serious negative consequences for the biological communities present in them.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
