Preservation and conservation of Canis Lupus populations through biological surveys and non-poaching actions

Objective

The overall objective of the project is to organize a system of management which will offer the highest guarantees for the preservation of the wolves present in the park and their habitat. An intensive anti-poaching campaign is to be launched, flanked by measures to prevent damages by building wolf-proof enclosures for livestock.
Specific knowledge about the packs of wolves in the park will be duly deepened (estimates of numbers, the animals' actual hunting ranges, maps of breeding sites, diet in relation to available prey). In parallel, data will be collected on the populations of wild ungulates (roe deer, red deer and wild pig) which represent the principal food source for the wolf.
Damages to livestock will be indemnified and "sacrificial" livestock will be raised in appropriate areas to serve as prey for the wolves. This innovative practice has the double advantage of increasing the available food supply for the wolf and dissuading it from preying on privately-owned livestock.
The project will be duly supported by an education and awareness campaign aimed at the herdsmen, farmers and hunters as well as local schools and tourists visiting the park.

The Parco dell'Alto Appennino Reggiano is the most extensive regional park in Emilia Romagna and hosts a nucleus of 10-35 wolves. Because it is situated in the northernmost part of the range occupied by the wolf in Italy, it is of particular significance. Studies of the park's wolves have been on-going since 1988 and one of the animals has been fitted with a radio transmitter.
The wolf was absent from the area until the beginning of the 1980's, among others as a result of the types of land use in vogue, such as, for example, extensively coppiced forests. The massive fall in livestock raising, in particular of the 'transhumance' type, coupled to direct persecution, led to the total disappearance of the wolf from these areas.

The establishment of the park made the spontaneous return of the wolf possible, yet even so, factors which pose a severe threat remain, such as poaching, both of the wolf itself as of its prey, and the continuing absence of traditional livestock herding.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
