Management of the Runoff Waters from Arable Land

Objective

The aim of the project is to test, demonstrate and disseminate a new integrated, multipurpose planning tool for the abatement of the nonpoint pollution from agriculture. The project will promote the agricultural environmental protection; due to a new integrated way of planning, new methods, improved decision making and increased implementation of the protective measures water quality, biodiversity and landscape will be improved. The results help authorities at all levels to integrate environmental considerations in land use developement and planning and also target the financial support efficiently.

Eutrophication of surface waters due to nutrient load from arable land, and local acidity problems of drainage water with high heavy metal conentrations are among the major environmental concerns caused by the agriculture. In addition intensive farming causes loss of species, thus diminishing the biodiversity and deteriorating the landscape. Despite of the fact that there are several ways of controlling the agricultural load, utilization of these methods has been limited. The existing constraints and incentives aimed at the farmers need to be reviewed, and their efficiency should be increased, if found necessary. A need to be able to consider environmental impacts and protection in agriculture comprehensively, taking into notice environmental, social and economical aspects, has given rise to
