Objective
Environmental management of an industrial area with a surface of 100.000 m2, that is characterized as residential area. Soil and water decontamination and rehabilitation of the area before the beginning of the residential development.
Development of a methodology for an efficient treatment in similar cases in Greece. Publication of the methodology.
Due to the uncontrolled operation of many industrial installations, serious environmental problems have occured in the soil, surface water and perhaps in the ground water.
With the financial support of the community, we have already performed a preliminary soil investigation with soil and water sampling and analyses at a certain area of 100.000 m2 surface and detected serious soil and surface water contamination mainly from volatile petroleum hydrocarbons.
We plan to proceed in the following actions:
1. Completion of the already performed soil investigation with groundwater drillings and soil/water sampling and analyses.
2. Soil decontamination with the help of an in situ soil venting system supported by oxidation reagents like hydrogen peroxide (H202).
3. Establishment of a groundwater monitoring system in the area and pumping of surface contaminated water and clean up with air-stripping systems.
4. Rehabilitation of the area.
The results of that project will be:
1. Complete decontamination of the area before the residential development.
2. Development of a methodology for an efficient soil and water treatment.
3. Publication of the entire methodology and experience in an E.U. databank.
