Study for the assessment and management of fisheries in the western mediterranean

Objective

The aim of the proposed research is to provide suitable scientific information that can be used as a basis for the working out of a common management policy for French, Spanish and Italian fisheries in the western Mediterranean.
A study is being carried out to provide suitable scientific information that can be used as a basis for the working out of a common management policy for French, Spanish and Italian fisheries in the eastern Mediterranean. Procedures for processing of information, coding and data recording have been established and adopted by collaborating researchers. Information concerning typological and cartographical aspects has been collected and comparison of software used for population and fisheries modelling has been ongoing, with a view to standardization of fishing procedures.
The expected results are :
an improvement of the knowledge on the fleets structures, on the fishing activities and on other activities related to fisheries;
the setting up of a computerized system for the building of common databases that can be used for fisheries modelling (catch statistics, biology);
the modelling of the economically main fisheries using models and techniques that will enable a multidisciplinary approach to the problems;
and the study of the possible effects of various scenarios of assessment, management and regulation of fisheries in the area concerned.
