DOUGLAS-FIR BREEDING PROGRAMME

Objective

IN MANY WESTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, DOUGLAS-FIR IS NOW A MAJOR REFORESTATION SPECIES.
HOWEVER, MOST OF THE SEEDS USED IN NURSERIES OF THESE COUNTRIES ARE COLLECTED ON UNIMPROVED NATURAL STANDS IN THE US. EUROPEAN COUNTRIES HAVE THUS TO DEVELOP THEIR OWN BASE FOR SEED AND PLANT PRODUCTION IN ORDER TO :
- GET A SECURED SUPPLY WELL SUITED TO THEIR ECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS;
- MULTIPLY AND GROW VARIETIES AS MUCH IMPROVED AS POSSIBLE.

THE PROPOSED RESEARCH PROGRAM IS WORKING ON TWO LINES :
- USING ALL POSSIBILITIES OF CONE-COLLECTION IN THE U.S. TO IMPORT IN EUROPE SEED FROM THE BEST IDENTIFIED PROVENANCES FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF LARGE SEED STANDS AND BREEDING STOCK;
- DEVELOPPING ALL ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES WHICH CAN SPEED-UP BREEDING AND PROPAGATION OF SUPERIOR MATERIAL FOR THE USE IN FOREST.

THE PROGRAM WILL BE CARRIED OUT JOINTLY IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY, BELGIUM AND FRANCE, AND WILL CONSIST OF 9 DIFFERENT SUBJECTS:
1. DEVELOPMENT OF BREEDING POPULATIONS
2. ESTABLISHMENT AND SELECTION OF SEEDS STANDS
3. DELINEATION OF SEED AND BREEDING ZONES FOR THE E.C.
4. FLOWER INDUCTION
5. IMPROVEMENT OF VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION METHODS
6. IMPROVEMENT OF POLLEN HANDLING TECHNIQUES
7. OPTIMIZATION OF MATING DESIGNS AND HYBRIDIZATION
8. OPTIMIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF SEED-ORCHARDS STRATEGIES
9. EXCHANGE OF STAFF, INFORMATION AND MATERIAL
