Objective
TO ESTABLISH VARIOUS WAYS OF UTILIZING COMMON EEC HARDWOODS IN HIGH YIELD PULPING FOR VARIOUS PAPER END PRODUCTS.
THIS VAST PROJECT COMBINES SEVERAL DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO THE NEED TO EXPLOIT AVAILABLE EEC WOOD. THE SPECIES USED WILL BE OAK AND BEECH, WHILE BIRCH, ABOUT WHICH SOME KNOWLEDGE IS AVAILABLE FROM SCANDINAVIA, USED AS A COMPARISON.
THE WORK COMPRISES TO BEGIN WITH, A STUDY OF THE MORPHOLOGY OF THE FIBRES AND THE REACTION TO VARIOUS DEGREES OF SULPHONATION TREATMENT. PULP WILL BE MADE ON A LAB SCALE IN SWEDEN AND ON A PILOT SCALE IN ITALY.
THE EFFECT OF METAL CATALYSTS AND OF ORGANIC ACIDS AND ORGANOSOLVS SUCH AS METHANOL WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN GERMANY, WHILE BLEACHING WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE WILL BE STUDIED IN FRANCE AND DENMARK.
THE PULPING METHODS TO BE TRIED WILL BE CTP AND CTMP, BUT ALSO STONE GRINDING UNDER PRESSURE IN A PILOT PLANT IN GERMANY WHERE THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT STONE SURFACE WILL BE EVALUATED.
REFINING STUDIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN ITALY, ALSO PAPER PRODUCED IN CTP AND IN THE CENTRAL RES. LABS. IN FINLAND.
IN SUCH CASES WHERE THE PULPING PROCESS IS MIXED - HARDWOOD AND SOFTWOOD, INDUSTRIAL SCALE TRIALS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN ATHENS.
