Objective
THE MAIN INNOVATION RESULTING FROM THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS PROPOSAL WILL BE :
(1) THE BETTER IDENTIFICATION AND MAINTENANCE OF GRADIENTS WITHIN ACCEPTABLE LIMITS DURING THE DRYING PROCESS, FACTORS ONLY INDIRECTLY ATTENDED TO BY CONVENTIONAL KILN CONTROL SYSTEMS WHICH CONTROL ON THE BASIS OF AVERAGE MOISTURE CONTENT.
(2) IT ALSO RECOGNISES THE NEED TO MINIMISE SEVERE GRADIENTS IN THE DRIED TIMBER SINCE STEEP GRADIENTS IN THE DRIED PRODUCT GIVE RISE TO PROBLEMS WITH FURTHER PROCESSING.
ECONOMIC POTENTIAL IS AS FOLLOWS :
(1) ELIMINATION OF SEVERE GRADIENTS, REDUCED WASTE AND THE AVOIDANCE OF DISTURBANCE OF DOWN STREAM PRODUCTION PROCESSES,
(2) MORE EFFICIENT DRYING APPROPRIATE TO TRUE NEEDS BY ENABLING BETTER CONTROL OF THE PROCESS, THEREBY ENABLING SUBSEQUENT SAVINGS OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION LEADING TO IMPROVED ECONOMY
THE AIM OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO DEVELOP TO PROTOTYPE STAGE AND EVALUATE UNDER PRACTICAL CONDITIONS A KILN CONTROL SYSTEM BASED ON IN SITU MEASUREMENTS OF GRADIENTS IN THE TIMBER DURING THE DRYING PROCESS, AND ALSO TO CONSIDER THE ELIMINATION OF STRESSES SET UP IN THE TIMBER SUBJECTED TO EXCESSIVE GRADIENTS.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
