IMPROVEMENT OF WASTE PAPER BLEACHING.

Objective

TO IMPROVE THE BLEACHING OF WASTE PAPER, WHICH CURRENTLY GIVES ONLY 65% TO 70% BRIGHTNESS AND THEREBY LIMITS THE USE.

THE PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE THE ORIGINS OF THE PROBLEMS IN BLEACHING WASTE PAPER AND TRY TO IDENTIFY THE DISSOLVED AND SUSPENDED MATERIALS WHICH IMPEDE THE BLEACHING EFFECT BOTH WITH HYDROSULPHITE AND HYDROXIDE BLEACHING.
HAVING DONE THIS, ATTEMPTS WILL BE MADE TO IMPROVE BLEACHING BY FOLLOWING WORK DONE AT DARMSTADT IN THE PREVIOUS DG XII RESEARCH PROGRAMME. THIS WILL INVOLVE CHANGING BLEACHING FORMULATIONS, CHANGING PROCESS PARAMETERS SUCH AS TEMPERATURE, LOOKING FOR NEW BLEACHING AGENTS, COMBINING OXIDISING AND REDUCING AGENTS, CHANGING THE METHODS OF ADDITION, LOOKING AT THE WET END CHEMISTRY AND ITS EFFECT ON THE RESULT.

WHEN OPTIMUM CONDITIONS ARE ARRIVED AT, PILOT PLANT TRIALS WILL BE ATTEMPTED AND AN ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT PRESENTED.
