ALTERNATIVE METHODS FOR THE TREATMENT OF WASTE LIGNINS ARISING FROM WOOD PROCESSING FOR PAPER PULP MANUFACTURE

Objective

TO FIND METHODS OF IDENTIFYING THE COMPONENTS OF LIGNIN WHICH COULD FORM CHEMICAL FEED STOCK FOR INDUSTRIAL USE.

THERE IS A GROWING INTEREST IN THE USE OF LIGNIN, BUT GENERALLY ONLY LIGNOSULPHONATES FROM BISULPHITE ARE USED. THIS PROJECT WOULD TAKE LIGNIN FROM EUCALYPTUS SULPHATE PULPING - A GROWING COMMUNITY RESOURCE, AND CHEMICALLY TREAT IT TO DIVIDE IT INTO FRACTIONS OF DIFFERENT MOLECULAR WEIGHTS.

ULTRAFILTRATION TECHNIQUES, TOGETHER WITH IR SPECTROSCOPY AND CHROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS WOULD AID IN ESTABLISHING THE CHEMICAL IDENTITY OF THE FRACTIONS.
THIS ESTABLISHED, WORK WOULD PROCEED IN POSTULATING INDUSTRIAL USES FOR THE PRODUCTS.
