ECONOMIC IMPROVEMENT OF THE DURABILITY OF SPRUCE

Objective

TO EXTEND THE USE OF SPRUCE THROUGH IMPROVED PRESERVATIVE TREATMENTS AND A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF ITS DURABILITY AND RELATED PROPERTIES IN SERVICE.

PRESERVATIVE PENETRATION AND ABSORPTION IN SEASONED SPRUCE (PICEA ABIES KARST.) SAPWOOD AND HEARTWOOD IS INVESTIGATED SEPARATELY IN RADIAL, TANGENTIAL AND AXIAL DIRECTIONS. THE PENETRATION PATTERNS ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF SEASONED PINE (PINUS SILVESTRIS L.) SAPWOOD AND HEARTWOOD. AS PRESERVATIVES, INORGANIC AND ORGANIC COPPER COMPOUNDS ARE USED IN ACID AND ALKALINE WATER SOLUTIONS AND IN AN ORGANIC SOLVENT. WOODEN TEST PIECES ARE TREATED BY IMMERSION OR BY PRESSURE IMPREGNATION USING DIFFERENT IMPREGNATION PROGRAMMES. THE MICRODISTRIBUTION OF PRESERVATIVES IN WOOD CELLS AND CELL WALLS IS STUDIED MICROSCOPICALLY AND BY MICROANALYSIS AS FAR AS POSSIBLE. THE DECAY RESISTANCE OF THE TREATED TEST PIECES WILL ALSO BE TESTED WITH A PART OF THE TEST MATERIAL.

THE SYSTEMATICAL EXAMINATION OF THE TREATMENT RESULTS IN DIFFERENT ANATOMICAL DIRECTIONS WILL ALLOW TO CREATE AN UNDERSTANDING ON THE PRESERVATIVE PENETRATION AND DISTRIBUTION IN SPRUCE AND ON THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS PRESERVATIVE AND TREATMENT FACTORS UPON THE RESULT. THE COMPARISON OF THE PENETRATION PATTERN WITH PINE WOOD WILL HELP TO REALIZE THE REASONS BEHIND THE POOR TREATABILITY OF SEASONED SPRUCE AND WAYS TO OVERCOME THE TREATMENT DIFFICULTIES. THE DECAY TESTS WILL ALLOW AN EVALUATION OF THE PROTECTIVE EFFICIENCY ACHIEVED BY PARTIAL (ENVELOPE) TREATMENTS. IN THE BASIS OF THE RESULTS, CONDITIONS FOR OPTIMAL TREATMENTS OF SEASONED SPRUCE CAN BE SUGGESTED.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
