DISPOSAL OF HALOGENATED WASTES BY PYROLITIC DECOMPOSITION USING A MOLTEN SALT PROCESS

Objective

TO SET UP A PROCESS WHICH REDUCES THE AMOUNT OF GAS PRODUCED AND WHICH CAN ELIMINATE PARTLY OR TOTALLY THE POLLUTANTS.

THE PROCESS SHOULD LEAD TO THE FOLLOWING RESULTS AND ADVANTAGES WITH REGARD TO OTHER PROCESSES:

- RAPID HEATING OF WASTE PRODUCT TO STIMULATE THE FORMATION OF GASES INSTEAD OF SHARRING.
- GOOD HEAT TRANSFER.
- CATALYSIS OF THE COKE REACTIVITY BY POTASSIUM.
- ABSORPTION OF CHLORINATED POLLUTANTS BY A BASIC BATH.

THE EXPECTED VOLUME OF GAS FORMED IS 4.8 TIMES LOWER THAN WITH CASE OF COMBUSTION; THEREFORE GAS TREATMENT COSTS ARE DECREASED.

THE CHEMICAL FEASIBILITY (CHOICE OF GASIFYING AGENT, MOLTEN SALT AND TEMPERATURE) AS WELL AS THE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY (CHOICE OF MATERIALS THAT RESIST TO THE CORROSIVE BATH AND GASES AND THE METHOD OF INTRODUCING THE WASTE PRODUCTS INTO THE REACTOR) OF THE PROCESS WILL BE TESTED.
