DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATE THERMOPLASTIC MATERIAL FORMS FOR USE OF HIGH PERFORMANCE THERMOPLASTIC COPOSITES

Objective

The aim of this project is to investigate new preforms which, due to the woven structure of the reinforcing carbon fibres and the thermoplastic matrix fibres, are suitable for manufacturing complex shaped composite parts. The initial stage of the work will concentrate on the selection of the most suitable carbon and matrix fibre combinations and optimisation of the stuctural elements of the composite in terms of phase size distribution, etc. Different processing conditions will be investigated and finally a composite part will be manufactured by using the most promising preform and processing technique.

THE INITIAL STAGE OF THE WORK WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE SELECTION OF THE MOST SUITABLE CARBON AND MATRIX FIBRE COMBINATIONS AND OPTIMISATION OF THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF THE COMPOSITE IN TERMS OF PHASE SIZE DISTRIBUTION, ETC...

DIFFERENT PROCESSING CONDITIONS WILL BE INVESTIGATED AND FINALLY A COMPOSITE PART WILL BE MANUFACTURED BY USING THE MOST PROMISING PREFORM AND PROCESSING TECHNIQUE.

THE IMPROVED FLEXIBILITY IN COMPOSITE DESIGN, IE COMPLEX SHAPED PARTS, AND THE USE OF MORE ECONOMICAL MANUFACTURING METHODS ARE LIKELY TO WIDEN THE APPLICATIONS OF CARBON FIBRE REINFORCED THERMOPLASTIC MATERIALS IN AEROSPACE INDUSTRY AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
