Objective
DEVELOPMENT OF AN OPERATIONAL SYSTEM FOR EXPLORATION USING MULTIDATA CORRELATION INCLUDING REMOTE SENSING IMAGERIES.
The main purpose of the project has been to develop a tool to be applied in mineral exploration. Research focused on the following points:
offering a fast and inexpensive technique for exploration;
contributing to the acquisition of more detailed knowledge of the surface geology;
supporting georeffered databases, where all the geological information can be stored, thus facilitating the interactive integration of multisource datasets.
The project has been performed using the geological knowledge and the data available on a wide area of more than 15 000 km{2} around the Almaden mercury deposit, located approximately in the centre of the southern part of Spain. The information has been stored in image format and georeffered to the same coordinate system.
The main purpose of building up the database is to have an organization system giving easy access to information and where all the data are in compatible formate to facilitate overlaying.
The database has been build up in an image processing system, and a scale 1:50000 has been chosen for the individual sheets as a basic cell for this database. For each of these sheets, more than 45 images or layers of information have been created from the original data.
The more important feature of this methodology is the open character of the system, being possible to introduce any new scientific improvement or any new idea derived from geological field observations. The data integration and interpretation processes are always controlled by the geological criteria coming from the exploration field experience.
The methodology is very flexible, rapid and economic, it increases sharply the amount and quality of information provided by the original data and it is not a rigid system. In addition it is possible to cover large areas during an exploration project, to perform a fast, reliable and cheap exploration and to reinterpretate data from previous exploration campaigns, with a very small rate of additional fieldwork.
IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE ALMADEN PROJECT THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO IMPROVE THE GEOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION OF COMBINED REMOTE SENSING AND GROUND-AIRBORNE DATA SETS AND TO DEVELOP INTEGRATED MODELLING FOR THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MINERAL DEPOSITS IN THE TARGET AREA COVERING 10000 KM TO THE POWER OF 2 (HG, P, PB, ZN, AG, W, SN, AU AND INDUSTRIAL MINERALS).
THE ALMADEN TEAM WILL CONCENTRATED ITS ACTIVITIES ON:
- MODELLING OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MINERALIZATION AND THE ELABORATION OF "DIAGNOSTIC" TOOLS TO IDENTIFY EACH TYPE OF MINERALIZATION USING THE DIFFERENT DATA SETS.
- TO CHECK AND COMPARE IN THE FIELD THE CONFIDENCE WITH WHICH THESE TECHNIQUES CAN BE USED IN RELATION TO A CONVENTIONAL EXPLORATION PROJECT, DEVELOPED AT THE SAME TIME IN THE SAME AREA.
- TO COORDINATE AND COLLABORATE IN THE INTRODUCTION OF THESE METHODS ON A PERSONAL COMPUTER, WITH THE AIM OF INCREASING THE USAGE AND ACCESSIBILITY, AS AN EVERYDAY TOOL IN THE MINING EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES.
