ENHANCEMENT OF THE EXTRACTION, SMELTING AND STEELMAKING USAGE OF CHROMIUM SOURCES INDIGENOUS TO THE COMMUNITY.

Objective

THE AIM OF THE PROPOSED R&D WORK IS TO INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY OF EXTRACTING AND USING CHROME SOURCES INDIGENOUS TO THE COMMUNITY (GREEK DEPOSITS) FROM MINING THE ORE TO USE IN STAINLESS STEELMAKING; ALSO, TO PRODUCE A TECHNICALLY IMPROVED (AND THEREFORE FINANCIALLY MORE VALUABLE) FERRO-CHROME.
This research has carried out investigations to enhance the efficiency of extracting and using chrome sources indigenous to the Community (Greek deposits) from mining, to use in stainless steelmaking. In view of the importance of stainless steels within the developed economies (chemical processing plant, nuclear power generation, etc) and the large investment of many Community members in stainless steel production, any improvements secured could represent an important commercial advantage.
1. PLASMA SMELTING TRIALS OF CHROME ORE.
2. SMELTING CHROME ORE WITH COAL (COAL INJECTION).
3. SAMPLING AND ASSAYING OF GREEK FECR SHIPMENTS.
4. TESTING CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF GREEK FECR SHIPMENTS.
5. STEELMAKING TRIALS ON A PRODUCTION SCALE.

ALL OF THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE PROPOSED R&D WORK HAVE MAJOR COMMERCIAL CONSEQUENCES, BUT SOME ARE MORE TECHNICALLY INNOVATIVE THAN OTHERS.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
