Objective
DEVELOPMENT OF EXPLORATION CRITERIA BASED ON ADVANCED GEOCHEMICAL AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY.
Progress has been made in the development of a robust metallogenic model and associated exploration criteria for granite related ore deposits. The research was based on an integrated geochemical, geophysical and geological study of selected granites in 3 areas: the French Hercynides, the German Hercynides and the British Caledonides. As a result, a common database for each of the 3 study areas has been prepared and a common terminology has been developed for use in Caledonian and Hercynian terrains. A sophisticated 3-stage model has been developed based on advanced petrogenetic modelling combined with detailed mineralogy, and field and geophysical studies. The first 2 stages represent the magmatic stage, the latter metalliferous mineralisation processes and the formation of economic ore deposit. The criteria developed are suitable for screening digital datasets using image analysis and geographical information systems.
Investigations were carried out in the following 3 subjects that proved to be very important for understanding of the metallogeny in the Fichtelgebirge area:
the age of the uranium mineralization and related episyenitization at the Hebanz locality with strontium isotope investigations;
the urainum and tin mineralizations in the Rudolfstein mine;
the sequence in time and space of the different granite associated mineralizations in the Fichtelgebirge area.
In the Fichtelgebirge 2 distinct types of granite related mineralization exist, a hydrothermal uranium mineralization and a greisen bound arsenic, copper, zinc, silver, cadmium and tungsten mineralization. Primary cassiterite mineralizations could not be found in the studied greisen zones near Weissenstadt. Most of the cassiterite was probably deposited, like in similar settings of the Erzgebirge, at higher, now eroded, levels. The erosion alluvial tin deposits of Weissenstadt, among others.
Several phases of uranium mineralization spanning a long period of time can be distinguished in the Fichtelgebirge. The first phase of uranium mineralization is represented by pitchblende bearing quartz veins at the northern margin of the G1 granite at Grossschloppen (320 to 330 Ma). The second phase involved precipitation of uranium as pitchblende and other oxides in episyenitized G1 granite between 280 and 210 Ma, with a maximum concentration at about 210 Ma. During late Cretaceous or early Tertiary (Alpine) times the uranium was again remobilized and concentrated along young faults and fractures of the granites forming, for example, the torbernite mineralizations at the Rudolfstein uranium mine.
THE PRINCIPAL AIM OF THE JOINT PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF EXPLORATION CRITERIA FOR GRANITE-ASSOCIATED MINERAL DEPOSITS BASED ON COMPARATIVE STUDIES IN CALEDONIAN AND HERCYNIAN TERRAINS IN EUROPE. SPECIAL EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON THE FERTILITY OF THE PROTOLITHS AND DERIVED MAGMA, THE COMPOSITION OF FLUIDS INVOLVED IN MINERALIZATION AND THE ROLE OF LINEAMENTS.
MAIN AREAS OF INVESTIGATION WILL BE:
- COMPILATION OF ALL AVAILABLE DATA (GEOLOGICAL, REMOTE SENSED, GEOPHYSICAL, GEOCHEMICAL, MINERALOGICAL) IN DIGITAL FORM;
- SYSTEMATIC MINERALOGICAL, PETROGRAPHICAL, GEOCHEMICAL AND ISOTOPIC STUDIES OF THE GRANITES, THEIR HOST ROCKS AND PRESUMED SOURCE ROCKS;
- PHASE CHEMISTRY AND PETROGENETIC MODELLING TECHNIQUES TO ELUCIDATE THE MAGMATIC HISTORY OF THE GRANITES;
- INDICATOR OF HIGH TO LOW TEMPERATURE WATER-ROCK INTERACTION.
IN THIS JOINT PROJECT, MAIN RD ACTIVITIES OF THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF MUNICH WILL BE CONCENTRATED ON THE FICHTELGEBIRGE GRANITIC AREAS WHERE SEVERAL MINERALISATIONS OCCUR (U, W ETC) AND WILL BENEFIT OF A LOT OF DRILL CORES FROM MINING COMPANIES. WORK WILL BE ALSO FOCUSSED ON TRACE ELEMENTS GEOCHEMISTRY.
