Objective
THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO RECOVER CO, NI, MO AND V FROM SPENT CATALYSTS ESPECIALLY THOSE OF THE HYDRODESULFURIZATION PROCESS. SUCH METALS ARE CURRENTLY IMPORTED FROM OUTSIDE EUROPE.
Research has been carried out into the recovery of cobalt, nickel, molybdenum and vanadium from spent catalysts of the petroleum industriesespecially those of the hydrodesulphurisation process.
Preliminary tests were performed: leaching both at atmospheric pressure and under pressure as well as chlorination under different conditions. The results indicated that both molybdenum and vanadium can be removed selectively and with good extraction yield (over 80%) by leaching or chlorination processes, but it is difficult to obtain a good extraction yield of cobalt and nickel without aluminium extraction. The leaching strategy was optimised and the parameters involved defined. The chlorination process was studied following 2 strategies: selective chlorination at temperatures lower than 500 C, and chlorination at temperatures higher than 500 C. In the research corresponding to the fourth period, the chlorination results, using both strategies, were improved obtaining good results. On the other hand, metal separation experiments were performed.
STAGE 1.
1.- INVENTORY AND ASSESSMENT OF THE ECONOMIC TARGETS ON A COUNTRY-BY-COUNTRY BASIS (SPAIN, ITALY, FRANCE).
2.- SELECTION OF TYPICAL SAMPLES AND LISTING OF CHARACTERISTICS IN ORDER TO DEFINE HOMOGENEOUS GROUPS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS FOR THE RECOVERY OF CATALYSTS.
THE METHODS TO BE USED ARE:
A) QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE CHEMICAL ANALYSIS (EMISSION AND ABSORPTION SPECTRA...)
B) ANALYSIS BY MEANS OF ELECTRON SWEEP MICROSCOPY
C) ELECTRONIC MICROPROBES
D) X-RAY FLUORESCENCE AND DIFFRACTOMETRY
E) THERMOGRAVIMETRIC OR DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL ANALYSIS
F) SPECTRUM ANALYSIS (ESCA, IR, UV,...)
G) STUDY OF ORGANIC MATTER AND POSSIBLE PRETREATMENT OF MATERIALS.
3.- CLASSIFICATION OF SAMPLES AS A FUNCTION OF THE ABOVE RESULTS AND SELECTION OF GROUPS DISPLAYING HOMOGENEITY (FIRST CONTACT MEETING).
4.- PRELIMINARY LEACHING AND CHLORINATION TESTS ON THE SAMPLES RETAINED (SECOND CONTACT MEETING FOR THE FINAL SELECTION OF THE PYRO AND/OR HYDROMETALLURGICAL PROCESSES.
STAGE 2.
THE SECOND STAGE WILL BE DEFINED UNANIMOUSLY BY BRINGING TOGETHER THE COMPLEMENTARY NATURE OF THE VARIOUS BODIES:
1.- IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MOST SUITABLE PROCESSES WITH A VIEW TO INDUSTRIAL OPERATION INVOLVING EXTRACTION.
2.- METHODS OF SEPARATING METALS FROM THE PRODUCTS EXTRACTED. CERTAIN METHODS WILL BE USED SUCH AS:
A) VAPOUR METALLURGY
B) SOLVENT, MEMBRANE, PRECIPITATION SEPARATION...AS A FUNCTION OF THE INDUSTRIAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE FINAL PRODUCTS.
