TANNINS AND WOOD PRESERVATION

Exploitable results

Results improved the knowledge about the European barks as sources of tannin and about preservative agents and treatments to protect wood. Tannin content, various extraction procedures and structural types of tannin were determined from the barks of the main European forest species (special attention on Pinus pinaster and Picea sitchensis). Wood impregnation treatments with tannin and copper, boron or silicofluoride were tested and developed further. The best impregnation was obtained with the 2-step treatment and vacuum pressure cycles. The protection capacity of the treatments and influences in the surface properties of timer (no effect) and in plywood manufacture (negative effect on the adhesion process) are now better understood. Wood impregnation with tannin alone provided some protection against rots and no protection against blue-stains. Only boron was effective against blue stains, whilst all the other treatments (also without tannin) provided good protection against rots.
