FAST AND ENERGY-SAVING TIMBER DRYING: HIGH TEMPERATURE DRYING (HTD)

Objective

This project will evaluate the applicability of the high temperature drying (HTD) process for the most relevant species on the European market (Pinus ssp, Larix ssp, Populus ssp and Eucalyptus ssp), where it concerns fast growing species in particular. Consequently the optimization of the drying process will be investigated.

In this project, in two different laboratories in Europe, experimental investigations will be performed on laboratorium scale on several wood species in order to determine the required drying parameters for HTD without loss of quality. These parameters will be verified and optimized in a semi-practical HTD kiln, with respect to the upscaled wood dimensions and process conditions.

Numerical simulations, taking into account the requirements as obtained from the laboratory experiments, will be performed for evaluating the physical processes in the upscaling of the HTD-process and for optimization. The work shall conclude with drying runs on a practical scale. In this project there will be a close cooperation with manufacturers of drying equipment in Europe.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
